Abstract:

Sexuality is constructed socially and culturally, in different ways by different human groups. This means that sexual practices and orientation and the sex/gender system are not only related to biological considerations but are linked to the very identity of the society in question. Throughout this entry, different aspects of sexuality in ancient Europe are discussed: the body as a key element in understanding sexuality, the influence of heteronormativity in our interpretations of sexuality in prehistory, how identities such as masculinity are constructed, and how sexual policies are shaped and transformed.
